Originally, Newquay Camping Shop took their Devon-based store online by hosting a website on the ecommerce platform Magento 1.8. However, in late 2017, when Magento began introducing some new updates that didn’t quite work for his business, Director Damien Rowe decided it was time for a change and began to look elsewhere for a platform that was better suited to his brand.
In particular, he wanted to be able to maintain and update his website easily, without the need for hiring a developer or purchasing any costly plug-ins. Feeling that his old website was looking a little dated, Damien also wanted a fresh new look for his store and was looking to add a few more features to the website to make navigation easier for his customers.
So when he came across Shopify, with its enhanced functionality and customisation options, Damien’s interest was piqued. As he began buying products from other Shopify stores himself, he became increasingly impressed by its usability and the way that it works. Before long, Damien had decided to make the Shopify transition for himself – and he has not looked back since.
When browsing the Shopify website to discover their recommended website developers, Damien found two or three agencies based in Devon, one of which was Swanky, and after meeting with a couple of members of our team, he soon decided we would be the best fit for Newquay Camping Shop.
Together, we established that Damien’s main goal when starting work with us was to increase his overall revenue on a completely revamped ecommerce store which was custom-built for him.
We quickly got to making Damien a unique, compelling and user-friendly ecommerce website which was perfectly suited to his brand. As Shopify Plus Experts, we approached the design process from a CRO (conversion rate optimisation) perspective, meaning that the end result was an online store that was fast, aesthetically appealing, fully responsive and easy to navigate.
And what came of this switch to Shopify?
In short, Newquay Camping Shop has achieved remarkable results incredibly quickly since the debut of their newly revamped ecommerce store. For example, after just two months, Damien’s conversion rate is up by an impressive 24.5%, and he has also reported receiving a much larger number of customers than in that same period the previous year.
In addition, he found that while customers used to often make just a single purchase when visiting his website, he has been receiving a lot more multiple orders from customers since transitioning to Shopify, meaning his store’s revenue is up by 40% with a 42% increase in average order value per customer. This is likely due to his website’s improved navigational features, such as the inclusion of a menu filter on the side of each page and a product recommendation function which helps customers quickly find more relevant products to add to their cart.
Damien has also been particularly impressed by his new website’s check-out system as it is fully responsive, simple and intuitive – an ideal recipe for attracting return customers – and by the automatic updates his customers now receive to let them know when their order has been dispatched and when it will be delivered.
In terms of store management, Damien also now finds making changes to his website by himself easier and more cost-effective, meaning he is saving both time and money every time he decides to tweak his store.
What’s next for Newquay Camping?
With an engaging new Shopify design now firmly in place, Damien is excited to continue building Newquay Camping Shop’s ecommerce success. Having recently signed up to Swanky’s Growth Accelerator plan, he is eager to identify his target customer base and learn exactly what products they are looking for, and also has plans to work with us on several exciting new marketing campaigns this year.
To increase his customer retention even further, Damien is also looking forward to introducing a customer loyalty programme within the next two months. This is an important component of any ecommerce success strategy as studies show that just a 5% increase in customer loyalty can increase the average profit per customer by 25-100%.
Over the course of the next year, Damien has ambitious plans to increase Newquay Camping Shop’s profit by another 15-20%. Given the impressive growth his store has already experienced since switching over to Shopify, this is a goal which we are confident he will accomplish, and we are excited to help him continue to escalate his business’ ecommerce success.
